Passing of Allan Wilson
It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of Allan Wilson, Honorary Life Member of the Geological Society of Zimbabwe, a highly respected geologist, and sadly missed mentor, colleague, and passionate supporter of the Society.
Allan was a prominent geoscientist, widely recognised for his extensive research on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. His work significantly advanced the understanding of one of southern Africa’s most important geological features.
In recent years, he taught at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for nearly two decades, where he inspired generations of students through his deep knowledge, dedication, and enthusiasm for the geosciences. Even after his retirement, Allan continued to work tirelessly, producing high-quality geochemical data and contributing actively to research.
Allan authored over 100 scientific publications, distinguished by meticulous field observations, exceptional mapping skills, and outstanding petrographic expertise. His unique ability to integrate fundamental geological insight with cutting-edge geochemical techniques earned him a global reputation as a top-class geoscientist.
This is a profound loss, not only to those who had the privilege of knowing Allan as a colleague, mentor, and friend, but also to the entire southern African geoscience community.
Our deepest condolences are extended to Julie and the entire Wilson family during this difficult time
A detailed obituary will be published in due course.
